For a neutral, airy vibe choose creamy and soft whites, pastels, and muted earthy tones. You can add depth with moody accents like dark blues or natural greens for an academic yet cozy feel or you can go all in and color drench every wall with those same colors. That means the ceiling too!

2. Embrace an Accent Wall

Adding an accent wall is an easy way to add interest in a subtle way that draws the eye to your main focal point – your bed. The accent wall can be a different paint color or you can add pretty wallpaper or do a diy wall of vertical shiplap or frame molding, but there are so many ways to do this and it’s a fun way to get creative without breaking the bank.

3. Natural Textures Are Your Friend

Incorporating organic and rustic materials is an easy way to contribute to the modern cottage bedroom look. Think natural fibers such as linen bedding, cotton throws, and soft rugs. Wooden or upholstered furniture, whether painted or in its natural state, will also add warmth and natural texture to the space. Don’t forget woven elements like rattan baskets for practical storage that still looks pretty!

Start with neutral sheets (a subtle pattern can be used here if wanted) then add a soft or textured linen duvet and finish a chunky knit blanket to lay across the foot of the bed. Throw pillows in various natural textures and soft patterns can enhance the look while providing cozy comfort.

5. Don’t Forget Functional Furniture

When designing your modern cottage bedroom, prioritize furniture that is both functional and the look you want, you don’t always have to sacrifice beauty for practicality. Natural wooden benches at the foot of the bed, wooden nightstands with drawers, and beds with built-in storage underneath are excellent choices, use these pieces to achieve an uncluttered, minimal look while still achieving your cozy feel.

Am I the only one that dreams of a cozy reading nook to have someday? If you have the space, incorporate a sweet reading nook into your bedroom design, typically in a cozy corner. A comfy armchair, simple side table, and floor lamp can create the perfect corner to unwind and drink a hot cup of tea with the latest bestseller, but don’t forget to add the cozy blanket to curl up in while you do so.

Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the tone for your modern cottage bedroom since it is arguably the last place you want harsh, bright light. Pendant lights or chandeliers that are brushed brass or black/iron can serve as eye-catching statement pieces, while wall sconces provide soft, indirect light. I prefer 3500K for my lightbulbs but it is more common to go even warmer with 2700k.

I will always recommend having plants in a room, even if they’re fake (at least they last longer!). There’s something life-giving about seeing a touch of nature in your room that makes you feel so refreshed. If maintaining plants isn’t your strong suit then opt for a faux olive tree or stems to use in your decor. Also consider choosing a gorgeous framed landscape or floral painting above the bed or smaller ones layered throughout the room.
